The steering gear ratio
Refers to the ratio of the steering wheel steering degree to the wheel steering degree. For example, if rotating the steering wheel once (360 degrees) causes the wheels to turn 20 degrees, the steering gear ratio is equal to 360 divided by 20, or 18:1. The higher the ratio, the greater the amount of steering wheel rotation required to steer the wheels to a specified distance. However, due to the high transmission ratio, the force required to rotate the steering wheel will be reduced.
Generally speaking, the steering transmission ratio of light vehicles and sports vehicles is smaller than that of large vehicles and trucks. The lower the ratio, the faster the steering response. You only need to rotate the steering wheel slightly to make the wheels turn to the specified distance. This is the characteristic that sports cars dream of. Because these small cars are very light, their ratios are low, and turning the steering wheel is not too difficult.
Some cars use a variable gear ratio Steering System, in which the center and outside of a rack and pinion gear set have different tooth pitches (number of teeth per centimeter).
