Structural principle of Steering System
Automotive steering systems are divided into two major categories: mechanical steering systems and power steering systems.
Mechanical steering system
The mechanical steering system uses the physical strength of the driver as the steering energy source, and all of the power transmission components are mechanical. The mechanical steering system consists of three major parts: a steering control mechanism, a steering gear, and a steering transmission mechanism.
Power Steering System
The power steering system is a steering system that uses both the driver's physical strength and engine power as the steering energy source. Under normal circumstances, only a small portion of the energy required for vehicle steering is provided by the driver, while most of it is provided by the engine through the power steering device. However, when the power steering device fails, the driver should generally be able to independently undertake the vehicle steering task. Therefore, the power steering system is formed by adding a set of power steering devices to the mechanical steering system.
For heavy vehicles with a maximum total mass of more than 50 tons, once the power steering device fails, the force applied to the steering knuckle by the driver through the mechanical Transmission System is far from sufficient to deflect the steering wheel to achieve steering. Therefore, the power steering device of this vehicle should be particularly reliable.
